You can try all the physical first: for the monitor, new HDMI cable, or get a different graphics card if you have one lying around and put it in to see if the output works from there. You can also try a different type of plug, VGA (blue) or DVI (white) or DisplayPort depending on what other connectors your pc/monitor has. If none of that works or is inconvenient, you can always try to pull your hard drive out and use a sata to usb device or enclosure to see if you can grab the data from the drive from a different computer/pc.
If your laptop is fried and your surge protector/battery backup has warranty/insurance against stuff like this, you might be able to recoup some money?
